With AI, lawyers can quickly summarize huge amounts of text and extract critical details to speed up their workflows. However, it's expensive to use LLMs on millions of legal documents—Everlaw needs an entirely new monetization model, where cost can scale with data.
In this project, I led the design of our entire platform's AI monetization from 0–1: from project definition with senior leadership, to building an admin dashboard and cohesive end user experience using generative AI.
Everlaw is a cloud ediscovery platform serving several Fortune 100 corporations and all 50 state attorney generals.
I was the sole product designer on this feature, collaborating with a product manager and 5 engineers. Design on this project lasted January–May 2024, and development lasted March–September 2024, with support from design.

We had just launched our free Everlaw AI beta, and monetizing them was business-critical for releasing a full-fledged product. Senior leadership determined we needed a credit-based system, similar to OpenAI's API tokens, where users buy credits and then spend them to run AI tasks.
How do we encourage the use of Everlaw AI among lawyers and paralegals, while building legal teams' confidence in the value they're expending and gaining?

Building a product 0–1
As a designer, I search for growth opportunities. This project wasn't extending an existing service, or even building one functionality from scratch. I led platform-wide design on monetization of this new product, from the beta to general release.

The following mockups are previews; high-fidelity prototypes and the process to craft them are detailed in my portfolio presentation. To learn more, please reach out!
How do I make cost visible and consistent?
Different designers worked on different features for the Everlaw AI beta. When I was then tasked with monetizing these existing features, I identified a critical risk—users being surprised by inconsistent UI and unexpected cost.
A cohesive design language
Through robust mapping of all use cases, I developed a comprehensive suite of components for all our AI use cases. Why buttons? I identified the CTA as the most universal element in our existing designs, and built a unifying component that also avoided a large, dev-intensive redesign.
Focusing a feature set into a product
Critical to release Everlaw AI, I designed: • Monetization • Permissioning • Admin analytics I established designs extensible for future designers, as we develop our AI features and build new ones.

How do admins manage credit usage?
Businesses are more confident in purchase decisions when they can track their spend and understand the value they're getting. I designed a robust admin dashboard for litigation support to track and control how their law firms are using Everlaw AI credits.
Advocating for specific data
I don't just design for project requirements—I anticipate and build what a product needs to grow. In my table design, I broke down databases into types of AI tasks so admins are able to prove to the decision makers at their law firms how this product is driving value.
Robust controls to build user confidence
New pricing invites uncertainty. I designed settings for managing credit usage and permissions, so admins know exactly who is spending what. I also advocated to senior leadership for user-friendly communication about credits to replace technical terms used by Sales and Marketing.

Within a week of release, Everlaw AI had a confirmed enterprise purchase, with several deals in the pipeline, for 100k+ credits each (exact dollar amount not shared publicly). As an entirely new revenue stream, Everlaw AI monetization has increased partner engagement.

Making Everlaw AI extensible
Designing this product required both systems thinking and UX fundamentals. Knowing leadership wants to invest heavily in Everlaw AI, I advocated for new, reusable components and expanded our design system to speed up designer and developer workflows as we invest in this product.
